One of the hardest things to research…
is the history of Christ in art. I find that most sources on the matter are too concerned with winning their side of an argument to present a fair and reasoned assessment of the history. At the same time, most scholarship with regard to the visual arts is, in general, less than fantastic, since the people who write such things are as flighty as the artists themselves. Combine this with the problem that any historical artwork by itself simply cannot supply a lot of scholarly information to the contemporary observer. Due to the constraints of the medium, the scholars who study such things are compelled to do a lot of guesswork.
I am complaining because I am trying to compile an essay on the history of Christ in art, and I’m not sure I can do it.
